Paper and Packaging
India’s paper industry forms around 1.6 % of the world’s production capacity with approximately 800 mills and exporting goods worth ₹4,000 million. The paper industry is estimated to rise to $13.4 billion by 2024, generating ample employment opportunities for many people.
Manufacturing Process: Pulp to Paper
Paper production involves stages such as:
- Pulp Formation: Chemicals are used to cook the wood chips and make pulp resulting in filtration and bleaching.
- Beating: To provide better quality, the pulp is blended with fillers.
- Pulp to Paper: The pulp is pressed between rollers and steam-heated cylinders to reduce the water content and form paper.
- Finishing: It is then placed on the reels for further process in the paper-making process.
Steam boilers and their importance in paper industries
Steam is essential in all operations that involve drying, heating, and cooking in food industries and other processing plants. Its roles include:
- Uniform Heating: Helps to maintain equal distribution of heat on the rollers.
- High Heat Capacity: Steam efficiently transfers heat energy for the process.
- Temperature Control: Allows accurate control of the necessary temperature for various papers.
- Efficiency: Functions in a closed loop for efficient and dependable energy utilization.
Some of the challenges faced in the paper industry include the following
- High Costs: Some basic materials such as wood fiber, are costly.
- Power Demand: High energy demands force mills to use boilers for steam production and electricity generation.
- Environmental Impact: Wood sourcing impacts the formation of deforestation.
Boilers in the paper industry
Steam boilers are the heat and power source for paper processing utilizing fuels such as wood chips and sawdust. Reciprocating grates are useful in the longevity of the boilers and greater combustion efficiency.
